Healthy Aging Tips

July 23, 2024
At Huntington Woods, we actively promote healthy aging by incorporating various wellness initiatives. We offer regular exercise classes tailored to different fitness levels, provide nutritious meal options designed by dietitians, and ensure residents have access to regular medical checkups. Additionally, we prioritize mental health through engaging activities, social events, and access to counseling services. By addressing these key areas, we help our residents maintain their physical health, emotional well-being, and overall quality of life. Here's how you can help promote healthy aging at home!

Physical Health

Taking care of your physical health is important. Staying active and exercising regularly can help you live a longer and better life. Exercising will help maintain a healthy weight as well as reduce the risk of future health issues. Getting a good night’s sleep is essential. Seven to nine hours of sleep is recommended for older adults. Lack of quality sleep can result in irritability, depression, forgetfulness, trouble focusing and the likeliness of increased falls and other accidents. A regular sleep schedule, as well as avoiding late napping can improve decision-making skills, overall mood, and concentration.

Smoking is a huge factor that can impair health. Quitting smoking can lower your risk of cancer, heart attack, stroke, and lung disease, improve blood circulation, improve taste and smell, increase your ability to exercise, and help set a good and healthy example for others. Finally, regular health checkups with your doctor will help maintain your healthy lifestyle, as well as help catch any health issues early on. This will help improve quality of life and wellness.

Mental Health

Mental health or mental wellness is equally as important. Maintaining positive social relationships is vital for well-being. Social isolation and loneliness can lead to feelings of depression, as well as a cognitive decline. Staying in touch with family and friends, or joining a group or class of your interest is a great way to combat negative feelings and emotions. Another way to focus on positive mental health is appropriately handling stress. Although inevitable, stress can be managed with different techniques, such as meditation, hobbies, and physical activity.

Leisure activities and hobbies are fun and can lower the risk of some health problems. Artistic hobbies such as dance, creative writing, and participatory art shows improve well-being, memory, cognitive function, and self-esteem. Lastly, cognition- the ability to think, learn, and remember clearly- can change with age. Staying active, eating healthy, and learning new skills and hobbies can keep older adults cognitively healthy.

Diet

Healthy food choices and diet are essential to help maintain healthy physical and mental well-being. Eating foods such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, healthy fats, and lean proteins is recommended. A healthy and balanced diet can help improve brain function and can protect from certain health problems. Following a Mediterranean diet is recommended for older adults. Alcohol should be limited or avoided. Alcohol dependence or heavy drinking affects all organs in the body, including your brain. This can lead to lifelong health issues, including poor heart health, liver damage, and dementia.

Following these healthy intake patterns can improve overall function and well-being, helping to age in a healthy manner. Huntington Woods is committed to keeping these high standards for quality care and helping our residents age gracefully.
